At the beginning of August (3/08), Conservation International Timor-Leste (CI-TL) held a meeting with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) to explore opportunities for collaboration in environmental conservation, ecosystem restoration, climate change, youth engagement, and community development.
During the meeting, the Country Director of CI-TL Manuel Mendes, introduced Conservation International’s work and commitment to forest conservation, marine ecosystems, wetlands, Watersheds and coastal areas. He also highlighted the importance of increasing investment in biodiversity conservation and strengthening climate resilience.
CI-TL also presented opportunities for collaboration through the Green Climate Fund (GCF), including the ridge-to-reef approach, which connects conservation efforts from mountains and forests to coastal and marine areas. This approach is important for promoting integrated ecosystem management.
The CI-TL Country Director also shared the possibility of launching Dugong Park, Manta Ray Park, and Whale Shark Park later this year. KOICA will also be invited to participate in these events, which could provide an important opportunity to strengthen collaboration and joint commitment to marine ecosystem conservation in Timor-Leste.
Meanwhile, KOICA shared its three main program priorities: education, youth empowerment, and climate change as a cross-cutting area. KOICA is currently implementing agroforestry programs linked to climate change, with the aim of supporting ecosystem restoration and sustainable development.
Youth and communities continue to play an important role in conservation efforts through ecosystem restoration, environmental education, and sustainable activities. Community and youth engagement is essential for strengthening local capacity and promoting active participation in nature conservation.
Through strong partnerships, CI-TL and its partners seek opportunities to strengthen nature conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable development in Timor-Leste.
The meeting was also attended by GEF-7 Regional Manager, Demetrio do Amaral de Carvalho, and Program Manager, Animesh Kar.
